New research results from Tohoku University in Japan have established the link between green tea consumption and the reduction in blood cancers. A ten- year study involving 40,000 participants monitored their health and lifestyle habits.
This conclusion has been supported by, the Mayo Clinic of Minnesota, after conducting their own studies on leukemia patients. Large doses of GTE’s ( green tea extracts) were administered producing immediate results. GTE’s are now considered a viable addition to orthodox cancer treatments.

We all strive for a radiant smile and now more green tea research reveals that its extracts have multiple oral heath-care benefits. The most potent polyphenols found in green tea are the extracts known as EGCG and ECG. These have been found to selectively induce cell death, (apoptosis) in many types of tumors, including oral cancer cells.
The National Institute of Health statistics show that 35,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. This accounts for 2 percent of all cancers with a five- year survival rate of approximately 50 percent. This high death rate is primarily due to the fact that oral cancer is often not discovered and diagnosed until late in its development.

More evidence has now been added to existing information revealing further data concerning the protective benefits of green tea. The research involved 41,761 Japanese adults between 40 and 79 years of age, whose health and lifestyle habits were closely monitored for ten years. The daily quantities of green tea consumption during this period, was of particular interest to the study.
The information compiled by the Ohsaki National Health Insurance Cohort Study was used by scientists, at the Tohuku University Graduate School of Medicine. It showed important connections between drinking green tea and its protective agents against pneumonia in women. The article was published in the September edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, citing once again, that the catechins and antioxidant phytochemicals, found in green tea work against infection.

Encouraging new research has shown that a combination of two chemicals, one of which is found in green tea have proved to be effective in the prevention and treatment of brain disorders. Serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases will benefit enormously from these new discoveries.
Amyloids are known to have a negative impact resulting in fatal brain disorders. These are tightly bound sheets of protein that find their way into the brain, eventually suffocating brain cells. This causes memory loss, language impairment, motor function and eventually premature death.

Catechin is one of the potent ingredients that gives green tea its health-enhancing abilities. It is only found in green tea, because the fermentation process involved in the making of black tea removes the catechin. It is a water-soluble polyphenol that is easily oxidized, so green tea is minimally processed. There are many types of phenols in the plant kingdom, and catechin is one of the most well-known of the flavonoids.
When researchers were trying to find out what made green tea such a potent health drink, they discovered that most of its protective effects originate with the catechins. Tea has 4 primary catechins- EC, EGC, ECg, and EGCG, which is the most powerful of them all. It is almost 100 times more potent than vitamins C and E.

In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, green tea extract increased energy expenditure and metabolism, and was proven to positively impact the body’s rate of fat oxidation.
While some of these effects were thought at first to be because of the green tea’s caffeine, there are some that cannot be attributed to the caffeine. Although, on the other hand, an equal amount of caffeine, given alone, did not raise energy expenditure at all. This means something else going is on with the active ingredients in green tea.

Green tea’s antioxidant power can fight the effects of free radicals on the body.
There are substances in nature that can eliminate free radicals, and many of them, like tannins, catechins, and flavonoids, exist in green tea. Catechin is an especially potent free-radical fighter.
To a lesser extent, vitamins A, C, and E are also antioxidants. Green tea contains high levels of all of these vitamins, and it is the most potent antioxidant drink available today. Green tea polyphenols have powerful anti-cancer, heart and brain protective, and antibacterial properties. The most potent of these, EGCG, is present in very high levels in green tea, and it is vital for the prevention of cancer.
